The EmdMAK Doorstop Alarm is not to be scoffed at!
A few years ago one of my friends’ parents found out that I was headed to Cancun.
Friends Mom: “Cancun… Mexico? But … it’s Mexico!“
Me: “Yes… I’m aware.”
Friends Mom: “Don’t you know that there was just a terrible earthquake in Mexico!?”
Me: “Oh no, really? I didn’t hear that. Where at?”
Friends Mom: “Well… you know. Mexico somewhere.”
Me: “Yeah… Mexico is a pretty sizable country…”
Friends Mom: “Yeah… but…”
Me: “I’m still going to Cancun.”
It was her real attempt to deter my trip to Cancun. We all have that particular worrier in our lives that seems to always find a way to give us just a little bit of grief before we hop on that plane, bus, or boat.
You know the one I’m talking about. The one that’s terrified that we’re leaving the country, or just the drive-way. Asking how we are going to protect ourselves and shoving pepper spray into our pockets before we head out the door.
Given, sometimes these are legitimate concerns. And as a female traveler – sometimes a solo female traveler – having some sort of protection is probably always a good idea (check these nifty knives out). I was once told by another backpacker that I should pack a doorstop.
I scoffed. What on earth would that do??
But a few years later, when a man attempted (successfully) to enter my room late one night in a hotel in Sri Lanka, it suddenly dawned on me. A doorstop isn’t a ridiculous idea, it’s not silly or an overreaction. It’s peace of mind. And that night as the only thing that separated me from that man was a mosquito net, I wished very much that I would have spent the few dollars to buy one. Although I’m not sure if I’ll ever use the alarm feature, it’s nice to have the EmdMAK Doorstop in my pack for the nights I don’t spend in a multi-bed hostel dorm.
