Here lately I’ve come to realize that having any way to defend yourself is better than having none. Sounds obvious doesn’t it? But so often I’ve relied on my gut instinct, my intuition, and the basic smarts and common sense that we all generally have to stay out of harms way.
Dark alley a few blocks from my house? No thanks, I think I’ll be avoiding that.
India after dark? Don’t think so, you’ll find me inside for the night.
Shady dudes aggressively eyeing me? I can take the long way around.
But what happens when I’m in my tent in the middle of the woods, and I hear footsteps approaching? What happens when my car breaks down on the side of the road and I have no cell service? What happens if I’m simply in the wrong place at the wrong time?
I could go out and learn Krav Maga, which would be freakin’ awesome actually. But I’m being a realist here, so let’s stay on point. The most practical thing I can think of that I can; A. Go out and buy right now, B. Know how to use five minutes later, and C. Afford, is a knife.
For safety while traveling, hiking, camping, driving, and countless other every day activities, these three knives are my personal favorites. I’m no knife guru, but I did enough research to know that these three knives had what I was specifically wanting in my price range – I’m not disputing that there are better quality knives out there. But in this price point, these are fantastic knives that get the job done. Whether that’s having to break out of your car after an accident, needing to start a survival fire, cutting off an annoying zip tie, or avert any unwanted attention, these knives will do all that and more.
They meet my big three: Durable, practical, and affordable.
The only one I own that I haven’t shown here is my purple Tac Force assisted open Joker knife. It’s available in other colors as well if purple isn’t your thing. It’s a decent little knife and I’ve had mine for about five years now. It’s sharp, easy to handle, heavy enough to feel like it can do some damage but light enough to carry around effortlessly. Although I’ve used it for several things (stabbing someone NOT being on that list) it is, I think, more of a novelty item. Which is the only reason I’m not exactly promoting it here. But if you’re a Batman fan, it may be worth checking out!
On to my top three favorite knives … *drum roll* …
BlizeTec Survival Knife: Best 5-in-1 Tactical Pocket Folding Knife with LED Light, Seatbelt Cutter, Glass Breaker & Magnesium Fire Starter
This knife may not have everything, but it’s got everything I’ll need during the average emergency situation. The LED flashlight is amazingly bright, and the fact that it’s magnetic is awesome. It makes it hard to lose when stowing it back into the handle. The window breaker is a nice touch (which I’ve never had to use) and so is the seatbelt cutter, which I have had to use but not on a seatbelt! The magnesium fire starter is probably my favorite part. And then you’ve got the bottle opener, because obviously after a day of breaking yourself out of your own car wreck and building a survival fire, a beer has clearly been earned. And cosmetically speaking, there’s no doubt that this knife looks badass. You whip this sucker out and someone is going to think twice before messing with you. Check out the video for an in depth look!
Gerber Paraframe I Knife, Serrated Edge, Grey
This knife, although pretty basic, is a very sturdy and sharp tool. It’s lightweight, and comes in both serrated or fine edge. Gerber is a brand I personally trust, I’ve used several of their outdoor tools and their warranties are fabulous. A few years ago I was getting ready to have a bonfire party, and that afternoon when I was chopping wood with my Gerber Gator Combo Ax my blade came hurling right off the handle, mid-swing! Now, I see how this may perhaps steer you away from the Gerber brand, but I assure you this was a total freak accident. When I took it back to the place of purchase and showed it to the man that sold it to me, his jaw dropped. He had never seen anything like it before in the 20 years he had been selling Gerber tools. With no questions asked, he replaced it. I’ve used it multiple times since and have had no issues. So you can rest assured if anything were to happen with a Gerber product, you can expect great customer service. Check out this video for a close up look at the Gerber Paraframe knife!
TAC Force Spring Assisted Open Outdoor Hunting Tactical Rescue Pocket Fire Fighter Knife Speedster Model Design Knife
I really like this knife a lot. This model also has the window/glass breaker and the seatbelt cutter. Comes super sharp, with both serrated and fine edge. I think it looks sleek, powerful, and intimidating, but still has that girly touch I prefer. The speed at which the blade snaps out of the handle is impressive and every time I hold it I secretly kind of want to be in a knife fight. Just kidding. Seriously though, I’m joking. Kind of.
The knife in the video is the same knife, but a different color. Keep in mind all of these knives come in a few different colors!
BONUS!
This little guy is a great addition. Highly practical and perfect as a stocking stuffer, or any little gift throughout the year. I equate the EDC coin claw with a box cutter. Any little task around the house or place of business can be handled with the coin claw. Keep the keychain and easily add it to your keyring, or take it off and slide it in your pocket. Just a little bonus I thought I’d throw in here, check it out!
What did ya think about these items? Do you have a favorite pocket knife already? Share in the comment section below! I’d love to hear from you!
I fish a lot. I too carry a knife. I feel naked if I don’t have it on me. Be surprised how much you will use one just for everyday purposes, let alone for protection. Great post.
Thanks so much, Aquinda. You’re right — you use it so much when you have it, pretty nice to have around 🙂
Great article! Demeanor is an important proactive deterrent also. Someone looking friendly, timid, lost, absent-minded, drunk (or drugged) or someone wearing earphones or talking on a cell phone – these women are the targets. I think I’ll take the pink one. Maybe the keychain one too. ?
You’re exactly right about demeanor! With a mentality like that, you’re a step ahead of the game 🙂 The pink one is a great choice, and the keychain is a cool little bonus!
Another awesome article! You are one smart woman! I love the way you think and those are some super nifty knives! I really like the window breaker one! Keep up all the good advice you’re giving people!
Hey, Vee! Thanks so much for stopping by! I love the window breaker function as well! Hope to see ya around again 🙂
As far as knives go these are excellent choices for women and men alike. I definitely get that false sense of security that we all fall for occasionally. The preventive measures you hinted about should always be a mainstay. I look forward to future articles by you on this topic. What deterrent is there when someone or something approaches before they are close enough to use a knife?
What other deterrents are there before someone gets close enough to use a knife… I guess the first few things that come to mind is to make noise, if that means yelling and screaming, or using a whistle, or knocking things over in a visible way for others to see that you are clearly trying to get away from someone. There’s pepper spray that you can use from a distance. But otherwise, my tactics are generally proactive and not reactive. It’s the avoidance, taking precautions, keeping space between myself and a potentially dangerous situation that I focus on. Thanks so… Read more »
That coin claw is pretty darn cool. I’ve actually never seen a knife quite like that before. Seems like it’d be handy, but I have a feeling I’d forget about it and try to take it through airport security on accident!
Out of curiosity, does it have a locking mechanism built into the blade to keep it from sliding open? I would imagine the answer is yes, but always worth checking.
Some do and some don’t, this one “clicks” closed and when opening you can feel it “click” open. But there isn’t actually a mechanism so to speak — if that makes sense? It’s not loose, I really favor it! I have definitely had the same thought about airport security lol But it’s not happened yet, knock on wood! Thanks for stopping by Craig, always great to hear from ya!
Hey Courtney, Another excellent post. I firmly believe, like you, that a pocket knife is a must have piece of gear. Everyone can benefit from owning one. Protection from assailants is the more obvious but still important to discuss. People will be a lot less willing to attack someone who demonstrates that they are not messing around. Whenever I land in a new country this is one of the first things I do is pick up a new knife that I can carry around. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Piece… Read more »
Justin! Great to see you back!
I agree with you 100%. Ultimately, any amount of money is worth piece of mind in my book – so when I purchased these knives, the most expensive still being less than 40 bucks, I was extremely pleased. I really love the BlizeTec, although Gerber is such a great brand I really enjoy that knife as well. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! And as always, it’s great hearing from you!
This is my first time reading a blog post on pocket knives! We always carry one when we’re camping so this is super useful. Thanks so much for sharing, Courtney!
Happy to see ya here! Hope to see ya around again!
Way to put an entertaining spin on pocket knives! I like all three, I even checked out the purple Joker knife you’ve got! Very cool! Interesting read and great ideas for Christmas, as (if I saw correctly) the most expensive one is still under $40.00! Fantastic price points, very affordable! And the Coin knife is a great little gift idea since I’m sure not many people have one! Seems not many people know of them! I’ve also checked out your Gifts For Travelers section, and your Top Picks — great stuff! Thanks for sharing!
How entertaining can pocket knife reviews be!? Haha. Thanks so much for checking around my site, I’m happy that you found some practical gift giving ideas!
I have to say the keychain knife is a really cool idea, I didn’t know something like that existed. I do think I am partial to the BlizeTec. They sure pack a lot into that knife. You had me at glass breaker! I love your commentary there as well! Personally, I own an auto (I guess that’s assisted), that I use when we go camping. I also like to just have a pocket knife on me, so I carry it all the time. It’s amazing how many times I need a pocket knife. All of your options serve a unique… Read more »
Hey Steve, thanks for reading! Yeah I love the coin claw for several reasons. It’s like ya don’t know just how often you’ll use it till it’s in your pocket and available. Same for most pocket knives I suppose ? Thanks for sharing!
Wow, the coin shape knife is really tiny! I have seen a number of keychain knives, but most are of very flimsy design. This one appears more sturdy. Now, correct me if I am wrong, but is that a clip on the reverse side? It seems like it has that utility.
Yes, this specific one does have a clip and is also very well made. Compared to others this one is my favorite so far 🙂
